about

Corryvreckan is a whirlpool off the west coast of Scotland. It's Europe's second largest maelstrom and this song uses it as a metaphor for poor mental health. In a climate of funding cuts and services which are physically inaccessible it's important to do what you can to manage your own mental health and to know that you are not alone in doing so. Steve wrote the song on ukulele for a mental health awareness tour of walks, talks and gigs across Cumbria in 2014. Under Danny's influence it has grown into a full-band, rock anthem.

It also features an extract from Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, Meditation XVII by the 17th century, metaphysical-poet John Donne.

lyrics

No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

As we get dragged down
Into those grinding streams
Tide waits for no man
And it doesn't hear our screams

We face our own Corryvreckan
Pulled in, pulled down
Friends are gone
In a second

So hold on, hold on
Take the tiller, I'll grab the oar
Lift your head up to the sky
We'll set a course for the shore,

We face our own Corryvreckan
Pulled in, pulled down
Friends are gone
In a second

Ride out the storm
Turn the boat around
When the water
Wants to pull you in
Ride out the storm
Turn the boat around
When the water
Wants to pull you down

We face our own Corryvreckan,
Only you know where the edges lie
And how to pull away
When it beckons
